Additional Information About Emotional Freedom Techniques and Matrix Reimprinting

EFT is remarkably successful as a healing tool. Many studies have been published and are now being conducted that will add to the body of knowledge about it. As noted on the EFTUniverse.com website, "EFT has been researched in more than 10 countries, by more than 60 investigators, whose results have been published in more than 20 different peer-reviewed journals."
EFT clearly works for thousands of people around the world. But HOW it works is not fully understood. It is fascinating to explore how the combination of tapping on meridian points while exploring problematic feelings physiologically changes the brain and body. I do believe that using EFT can bring about concrete physical change in the brain through the creation of new neuronal connections. Separately, in terms of processes, I envision EFT as a mindfulness healing technique that works by creating cognitive dissonance.
In an EFT session, a client calls up his or her troubling issues, physical discomfort or pain, or greatest emotional fears while gently stimulating the energy meridians. The tapping grounds the person in his or her body in the here-and-now, in a safe place and moment in time. The result is a split-second subconscious experience of cognitive dissonance: the client is highly agitated or even in pain AND comfortably relaxed and safe.
You can't be both at the same time. It is not possible to be emotionally traumatized at the same instant you are physiologically calm.
Scientists know that people change their attitudes or behavior to resolve the unbearable tension of cognitive dissonance. I believe that as the client's brain accepts that the body is "ok" with the EFT tapping, it realigns its emotional and thought processes to an "ok" state, too. Issues that triggered disturbing negative feelings in the client moments before become, almost miraculously, "non-issues." Hey, that's great news!

Matrix Reimprinting uses EFT tapping but it is different from EFT, which was developed to alleviate present emotional and physical discomfort. Matrix Reimprinting actually works on relieving the discomfort people feel about difficult or traumatic past experiences.
With Matrix Reimprinting, clients get to create alternative positive memories that bring a sense of resolution to traumatic situations from the past. The goal is not to rewrite a client's history or make him or her forget it, but to provide new outcomes. The process works by leading the client in his or her mind back in time to the trauma and simultaneously calming the body through the gentle stimulation of the meridian system. (Actually, it isn't even necessary to lead the client directly to the trauma if it was an unpleasant experience. The "Tearless Trauma" EFT technique was developed years ago so clients can avoid reliving any negative experiences if that is preferable for them. In EFT and in Matrix Reimprinting, there is never a need to re-experience difficult times.)
There are some traditional hypnosis techniques that target early trauma with the goal of supplanting or changing memories. But, in my experience, hypnosis is not as effective as Matrix Reimprinting. That is because hypnosis is a subconscious affair focused only on exploring and manipulating memories, ideas, and emotional states. There may be a resultant feeling of physical calm, but that is due to a calming of the emotional feelings.
Matrix Reimprinting interweaves the use of a type of waking hypnosis (used to explore early traumatic issues) with physically grounding the client in the here-and-now, through tapping on the meridian system of the physical body. This is a significant development in clinical work because it links mind with body, eliminating stress and trauma from both.
